Norway Accelerates Toward Electric Vehicle Dominance as EV Sales Surge

Norway continues to lead the charge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, with recent monthly data indicating that 90% of new car sales are fully electric. Figures from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration suggest that the number of battery EVs (BEVs) on Norway's roads will soon surpass petrol cars.

As of mid-March, BEVs accounted for 24.3% of Norway's 2.9 million cars, compared to 26.9% for petrol vehicles. With the EV market share steadily growing, experts predict that BEVs will outnumber petrol cars by the end of this year or early 2025, coinciding with Norway's official end to the sale of new petrol and diesel cars.

Robbie Andrew, a senior researcher at climate change think tank Cicero, anticipates that BEVs will overtake petrol cars within the next year, given the negligible sales of pure-petrol cars.

Norway's monthly vehicle sales reflect its strong EV adoption, with full battery EVs comprising 89.3% of new car sales in March, along with 2.2% plug-in hybrids and 5.7% mild hybrid vehicles.

While diesel vehicles still dominate Norway's overall fleet numbers, Andrew predicts that BEVs will surpass diesel cars within the next three to four years.

Norway's leadership in EV adoption stems from decades of pro-EV policies, including tax exemptions for BEVs, investments in public charging infrastructure, and setting an early end date for the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles. This support has led to significant reductions in vehicle emissions and other economic benefits, reinforcing the value of political backing for an electrified transition.
